Caring for Your Roses

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable), and remove guard petals (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

Plethora of Peonies and More

We ordered flowers from FiftyFlowers for the foundation of the bridal and bridesmaids bouquets and for the centerpieces. Peonies, roses, and ranunculus were the primary flowers and they did not disappoint. We floated a single peony in a bowl with a piece of freesia for centerpieces and it looked elegant and stunning. With the wedding being in the 3rd week in June, we were able to pick LOTS of fresh peonies from area gardens - tons of varieties - different shapes and colors and it was truly spectacular. The flowers we ordered were an lovely, reliable foundation. For the most part, the flowers we ordered from FiftyFlowers woke up and bloomed perfectly for the wedding - the exceptions: the veronica and the peruvian lilies, which didn't look good enough to use at the time of the wedding. Ironically, the veronica perked up and bloomed about 5 days after the wedding and lasted forever - almost a whole month. The roses, peonies, ranunculus, dahlias, and freesia were wonderful and made beautiful bouquets and arrangements.

Backyard Carnival Wedding

Like clockwork, the flowers arrived on the 10:30am FedEx truck. What my nephew hadn't told me upfront when he cut my flower budget with FiftyFlowers, was he was getting some cheaper flowers from another wholesale company! I told him that I didn't care, since he was paying for the flowers, but I couldn't guarantee the quality from the other location but that I could guarantee with FiftyFlowers. After using these other flower I will keep my business with FiftyFlowers.

The lisianthus, peachy cantaloupe garden roses, white rice flower and dusty miller I bought from FiftyFlowers. The others were from a box store that the groom ordered online! The phrase "you get what you paid for" was so true. The mums looked dead with petals hanging, and BRIGHT orange sprayed. I don't know if it was because they were sprayed orange before arriving. By the wedding, I think the only thing holding the petals on the spider mums was the peachy spray paint that I added, to tone down the bright orange that they were sprayed! The hydrangea from this other location were half the size of what I got the week prior for the Charleston wedding from FiftyFlowers. Ryan thought he was saving money...wrong. The salmon colored roses were good quality and turned out okay. But, I wished we had bought it all from FiftyFlowers!

The flowers arrived on Wednesday. I did my double hydrate prep first thing when the flowers arrived and later in the day. The weather in Arizona was 85 and no humidity. It was great as I got to work out in the backyard around the pool. The nights were cool enough that we could keep the buckets of flowers out in the back yard up against the house. Thursday morning I brought the buckets into the kitchen one by one, changing out the water and recutting under water one stem at a time.

Since I was trying to duplicate a bouquet for the bride that she pinned on Pinterest, I also picked up a few stems of a peachy Asiatic lily at the grocery store. The Pinterest original bouquet had peachy pink amaryllis blooms!

My nephew set up a table outside so I could cluster jars, bottles and vases in groups of 3 for the tables, with each table getting one cluster (39 small arrangements total)! I also needed 3 big vases for inside the house, along with 5 small and medium decorated vases for inside, 6 hanging decorated mason jars for the wedding chairs, the bride's bouquet, 8 bridesmaids bouquets, 2 mother of the groom corsages, 2 father bouts, and 9 bouts between the groom and his attendants.

All the arrangements came out great thanks to the beautiful flowers from FiftyFlowers! Thank you!
