Caring for Mums & Spider Mums

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Bloom Netting: Mums and Spider Mums often arrive with netting around the blooms to protect their large, delicate heads. Leave the netting on during hydration and processing. Remove it only when you're ready to design or arrange.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove protective packaging.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark area away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24–48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower heads above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Flowers made this DIY Wedding Perfect

I stumbled on Fifty Flowers after looking at lots of other traditional flower options that really didn't provide what I envisioned in my head. I honestly thought it was too good to be true when I scrolled through the site. There is no way you can get this volume, quality, and variety at such a low price... but you can! The flower consultants were extremely helpful and when the Lavender Blush Kale was not growing up to their standards they helped me find a perfect substitutions and traded it out no cost.

Once the flowers arrived I had a "flower making party" at my house with some friends and family. My Aunt lead the charge and in just a few hours we had the bridal bouquet, 3 bridesmaids bouquets, 2 mother bouquets, 1 flower girl basket, 7 boutonniers, and tons of table arrangements created. The wedding arch arrangement and chair decorations were add the day of. I hear the wedding arch was pretty difficult to pull off but they did an amazing job.

Fifty Flowers made my Pinterest Wedding dreams come true. The flowers really stole the show. They looked better than I could have ever imagined.

We Did it All Ourselves

We did everything ourselves, we utilized our time, talents, and money to make the day as DIY, inexpensive, and personal as possible without creating too much chaos or stress. We were lucky to have friends and family that were eager to help. Our sisters made all the bouquets and boutonnieres, my fiance made the place cards and signs, I arraigned centerpieces and decorated, and my fiance and I (with the help of our amazing Chef Best man, Colin Kelly) made all the food ourselves, in the week before the big day. With the help of our musician friends we had access to a full sound system and spent an entire weekend cultivating a dance-tastic mix of songs that would keep everyone dancing all night, and boy, did it work! We were so lucky to have a group of friends and family all willing to share their gifts and time with us to make our day so incredibly special.
