Caring for Your Hypericum Berries

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove protective packaging and guard petals (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

DIY Garden Wedding of My Dreams!

I knew when I started budgeting for and planning our wedding that going through a traditional florist was not an option for us. The prices in our area were way too much, so I settled quickly on the idea of ordering flowers through FiftyFlowers and arranging them myself. My mom was very nervous about arranging all of our the flowers, including my bouquet and my bridesmaids' bouquets, but I am so so happy that we did. I had my mom, aunt, 4 bridesmaids, my mother-in-law, and my husband's aunts all helping me with the flowers-- and it was so fun and memorable to spend the day before the wedding arranging everything together. I loved how all of our flowers came out, and I was proud to be able to tell people that I made my own bouquet, the arch decorations, the corsages and boutonnieres. It was a lot of work, but FiftyFlowers was so helpful in guiding me through exactly what to order and how to arrange what I needed, and I was so happy with the results. It was a magical, summer garden wedding, and I saved a fortune on my flowers. I could not have achieved the wedding of my dreams without using Fifty Flowers. It was so worth it!

Jessie & Tim - October 13, 2018

Tim and I met, through our close friend Brent, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula during winter break in 2016. I was living in Portland, Oregon working for Nike in Apparel Development at the time, and was visiting my hometown in Michigan for Christmas and New Year's. Tim was just finishing up his Mechanical Engineering degree at Michigan Tech University that month, and was roommates with Brent, who ended up being an usher at our wedding.

That winter break we spent most of our time hanging out at the boys' college house, playing boot hockey, skiing at Mount Bohemia and ice skating with our friends. Even though Tim was three years younger than me, we got to know each-other fairly quickly, because of all our shared connections through our church. Finally, after a week of hanging out with our mutual friends, Tim asked me out on our first date, two day before I flew back to Portland. We ended up hitting it off right away, and decided that long distance dating would be worth a shot. The year 2017 consisted of endless red-eye flights every 2-3weeks, long phone calls, facetime, and exciting adventures all over the USA. By the time 2017 was coming to a close, we were exhausted from all the travel and decided that we would get engaged before moving me back home to Michigan.

Tim and I were engaged on December 23, 2017 right before Christmas. The wedding planning started shortly afterwards, and we decide to have an outdoor wedding in the fall at my parents house, with high hopes for a gorgeous fall day.

The next big decisions we had to make were my dress and wedding theme. I grew up in my mom's sewing shop and attended school in Chicago for fashion design, so I was only natural that I would be designing and creating my own wedding dress, veil, cape, wedding decorations and floral arrangements. As for the wedding theme, Tim and I are from large families with children and wanted to have a theme that catered to both adults and children. We decide that our theme would be a formal fall festival!

I come from a long line of talented people, so almost everyone in my family had a hand in the creation of our dream wedding. Tim made the wooden box for our alter arrangement and helped to glitter all the pampas grass, that went in the back of the alter box, gold. My cousins helped to create the velvet pumpkins that were used around the entire venue, they also helped fold all the silverware in napkins with a ribbon and feather on each one. My dad found a local farmer to rent the hay bales from for the ceremony, and my aunt Eva helped me in the creation of the flower arrangements, with some assistance of friends and cousins. My Grandpa even got involved in the wedding creation and made 60 wooden chargers that were placed under our floral centerpieces and at the bridal tables place settings. My close friend Jamie made the wedding cake, and last, but definitely not least, my cousin Anders offered to catered smoked pulled pork for the event. Anders pulled two all-nighters before our wedding to prep and smoke all the meat for 300+ guests. The smoked pork was served with potatoes, salad, apple cider, cinnamon doughnuts and coffee. To say the whole event was it was phenomenal is simply an understatement.

The day of our wedding flew by quickly, but because we were all involved so much in the preparation, it felt like we were able to enjoy it before and after the wedding as well. All of our wedding helpers were gifted a gorgeous floral arrangement with flowers from Fifty Flowers, which I'm told lasted for weeks after our wedding!

Thank you Fifty Flowers for the amazing flowers and for getting all the flowers delivered to our door seamlessly! You made our wedding prep easy by being great partners to work with, and you helped us to make our day unique and special.

Everyone LOVED our flowers!

Flowers arrived on time, perfectly!
With all of these flowers I was able to make my bridal bouquet, MOH and bridesmaid bouquet as well as two small bouquets for my mother and mother in law. We used Billy Balls and Dusty Millers for the boutonnieres. People stopped my husband and bridal party to ask about the Billy Balls - they were a huge hit! Very pleased with Fifty Flowers. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go right back to using their services.
