Caring for Your Flowers

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Note: Care instructions below can be used for the majority of our flowers - for more information on specific care for each flower included in your kit, please visit their individual flower pages.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Tinted Flowers: If your kit contains tinted flowers, they may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

Ashlee and J-P stunning wedding flowers

When I first decided to do my daughter's wedding flowers, my friends and family thought I was crazy. I watched a zillion u tube videos, and another daughter took a floral class in Chicago, and we were ready to go. I was determined to design the flowers as it was going to save costs for the wedding. Although I am not a florist, I figured I could accomplish a wedding. It was a lot of work, and I would do it again as I have three daughters, so I have two more weddings to play florist. When I first asked my daughter if I could do her flowers, she was hesitant but agreed to hand it over to me. As the big day approached we discussed floral colors and I was first suggesting burgundy, oranges and yellows the traditional fall color scheme. Well she does not like oranges and yellow, and the girls dresses were a cranberry. I then suggested burgundy and peach,,,,,,,well that was a definite no. Her next comment was, can I have pink in my flowers? So after a zillion color combinations and flowers combinations from the fifty flower site on my own, I called Fifty Flowers and spoke to Violet. She was so excited to work with me and so excited when I told her my color stories. So on our consultation, we were on line and on the phone and she just started suggesting different colors and a variety of flowers. Once I saw the flowers all together in my cart, I was so excited to see them and order them for the big day. Ashlee could not see the bigger color picture, but she trusted Violet and me. The flowers arrived over 2 days and we had over 35 Home Depot buckets filled with flowers on my back porch. It was a little crazy, but beautiful. We did all the arranging for the reception(10 tall and 10 short centerpieces, as well as 3 bar, & 2 bathroom arrangements) at the reception site on Thursday. Friday, Kelsey made the hand tied bridal bouquets. We also made all the gap centerpieces, the church flowers, the candle rings for the church as well as the pew flowers.Thank goodness we remembered the throw away bouquet. We had others doing the boutonnieres with our guidance, and the corsages. I will admit it was a lot of work, but with the money I spent, our flowers looked like I spent at least 3-4 times that amount. Everyone loved the flowers at the wedding, church, the gap event, and the reception. I cannot thank FIfty Flowers enough as well as Violet for the guidance to pick out the flowers and give me the confidence to pull this off. I am by no means a florist but anyone can be a floral designer as nature does the rest and every flower is beautiful. We even had enough flowers and greenery left over after the wedding to make several arrangements for a local nursing home who really enjoyed them. I will certainly use fifty flowers in the future for all my floral needs. The flowers were top notch quality as well as the greens. The colors were vibrant and beautiful. Every flower was available and I even got a discount as Violet suggested I order one flower that was on sale at 10% off at a different time from when I placed my full order, so I ordered burgundy dianthus separately and they were stunning and opened up beautifully. All the flowers took my breath away and never in my life had I seen such an array of flowers and colors in one location at any one given time. Thank you so much.
