Caring for Your Peonies
Peonies require individualized care. These beautiful blooms will arrive in a range of stages — from tight, golf ball-like buds to blooms that are beginning to open. This natural variation is typical of how peonies ship. Follow the care steps below based on how your peonies arrive to get them event-ready.
Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement
If Your Peonies Arrive in Tight, Closed Buds:
Prepare clean containers with at least 4 inches of fresh, cool water.
Remove all packaging and bands, and strip the stems of excessive leaves to eliminate bacteria buildup.
Using clean, sharp floral shears, cut 2 to 3 inches off each stem under cool running water and place immediately in the prepared water.
Store the peonies in a cool, dark room and refresh the water every 24 hours.
If Your Peonies Arrive Already Opening:
Do not process the flowers immediately.
Lay the peonies gently on their side in a floral cooler or refrigerator free of fruits and vegetables (which release ethylene gas that can damage flowers).
The morning prior to your event:
Prepare containers with fresh, cool water.
Remove all packaging and bands, and strip the stems of excessive leaves to eliminate bacteria buildup.
Cut 2 to 3 inches off each stem under cool running water and place immediately in the prepared water.
Store in a cool, dark room until ready to use.
