Caring for Your Tropical Flowers
Tropical flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. If your flowers appear "sleepy" or "thirsty" after their journey, this is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.
Tropical Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Use
Step 1: Unpack and Inspect
Unpack Promptly: Open your boxes as soon as they arrive and remove any straps or outer packaging such as foam or paper.
Inspect Your Flowers: Look over your tropicals for any concerns before continuing with processing.
Step 2: Prepare the Containers
Use Clean Buckets: Choose buckets or containers that are clean and free from soap residue or bacteria. Rinse with warm water to help keep your flowers healthy.
Add Water: Fill each container with at least 4 inches of fresh, cool water. If flower food is available, follow the package directions and mix it in.
Step 3: Trim and Place in Water
Remove Packaging: Take off any rubber bands or plastic sleeves securing the flower bunches.
Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip any leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.
Trim the Stems: Use clean, sharp floral shears or scissors to cut about 1 inch off each stem at a diagonal under cool running water. Avoid using household scissors, which can crush the stems and limit water absorption.
Place Immediately: After trimming, place the stems directly into the prepared water.
Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain
Hydration Time: Allow tropical flowers to hydrate for at least 4 hours — 8 to 12 hours is ideal.
Water & Misting: Check water levels often, as tropicals drink heavily at first. Refill as needed, and mist petals and foliage 1–2 times per day with room temperature water.
Temperature & Storage: Keep flowers in a warm room between 65°F–75°F. Do not refrigerate your tropical flowers — cold storage can damage the blooms. Avoid direct sunlight, cold drafts, or excessive heat.
Step 5: Ready to Use
Once hydrated, tropical flowers are ready to be arranged. For best results, re-cut the stems every 24–48 hours and refresh the water regularly.
Tips from Our Experts
Tropical flowers may arrive looking soft, compressed, or slightly limp due to shipping. This is normal — they will perk up beautifully after proper hydration and misting.
Always mist tropical flowers gently with room temperature water once or twice daily to maintain their humidity.
These blooms are extremely sensitive to cold. Avoid placing them near vents, open windows, or anywhere below 60°F.
