Caring for Your Ornamental Kale

Greenery is shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. If your greens appear "sleepy" or "thirsty" after their journey, this is completely normal. Follow the steps below to help them rehydrate and stay fresh.

Greenery Care Steps – From Arrival to Use

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack Promptly: Open your boxes as soon as they arrive and remove any straps or outer packaging such as foam or paper.

  • Inspect Your Greens: Look over your greenery for any concerns before continuing with processing.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Use Clean Buckets: Choose buckets or containers that are clean and free from soap residue or bacteria. Rinse with warm water if needed.

  • Add Water: Fill each container with at least 4 inches of fresh, cool water. If flower food is available, follow the packet directions and mix it in.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Packaging: Take off any rubber bands or plastic sleeves protecting the greens.

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip any leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.

  • Trim the Stems: Use clean, sharp floral shears or scissors to cut about 1 inch off each stem at a diagonal under cool running water. Avoid using household scissors, which can crush the stems and limit water absorption.

  • Place Immediately: After trimming, place the stems directly into the prepared water.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow your greenery to hydrate for at least 4 hours — 8 to 12 hours is ideal.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Greens drink heavily when they first arrive, so check water levels frequently and refill as needed.

  • Avoid Overcrowding: Ensure each container has enough space for the amount of greenery you're processing. Overcrowding can lead to damaged stems and leaves.

  • Storage Conditions: Store hydrated greenery in a cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight, heat, or drafts until you're ready to use it.

Step 5: Refresh and Use

  • Change Water Daily: Refresh the water every 24 hours to keep your greens fresh and bacteria-free until use.

These were stunning. They came a little flattened, but as soon as they were put in water they perked right up. Just a beautiful addition and focal point to the bouquets.

The kale was such a unique addition to our bouquets. It all arrived fresh and on time. It does have a large stem, so we ended up cutting them off and using floral wire as the stem in the bridal bouquet as it was already to large.

Although these had a funky smell at first (mainly because I don't like to eat kale), I very much loved how full and large they were! Several guests commented on how beautiful they fit in the arrangements and added interest. They had color depth in their centers and were easy to work with their chunky stems.

Simple and Natural

If you have a few hours the days leading up to your wedding, and 1-2 trusty helpers, you CAN do your own flowers! From the beginning I just made my life easier by going with a casual, simple, natural vibe. Toss some stems in there. A bloom or two in here. Beautiful and earthy. I think one of my favorite parts of my look was the moss that I also ordered through Fifty Flowers. One box of Fresh Sheet Moss was more than enough to have 1-2 palm sized pieces of moss on each centerpiece. We had about 1/3 of a box left. And I thought for sure there would be some creepy bugs in the moss, but we never saw any! After decorating 35-40 tables similarly to the centerpieces shown (all a little different) we had about 20 ranunculus, 10 hydrangea, and two 5 gallon pails mostly full of greens remaining. We just didn't need all of it. It was a very large room and looking out across it was so beautiful. I highly recommend Italian Ruscus. Even though we ordered Nagi and the Ruscus was sent by mistake, it turned out to be such an important part of the arrangements. You can't beat the way the stems flow/drape.

For trimming flowers, I recommend you use pruning shears and not just household scissors. Maybe that's obvious, but they just work so much better! And I should reiterate how much you will want those helpers. The day before your wedding everyone needs to ask you a thousand things. Once your helpers (in my case, my mom and one of my amazing bridesmaids - new sister-in-law) knows what you want the arrangements to look like, they'll be able to keep going even if you get pulled away. Couldn't have done it without them! I did most of the trimming when the flowers first arrived and it only took about 2-3 hours total. Although my mom had to step in when I decided to make 25 dozen soft pretzels for a late night snack at the reception. #worthit

Note - I couldn't select a higher amount for how many centerpieces we made with the flowers. It was actually more like 45-50 centerpieces. Loose, simple arrangements (see photos).

These babies are pretty darn big. I really didn't know what I was getting into. I still enjoyed them. They don't look the best from all angles. They look the best straight on. I would have halved my order if I knew how large they were. Other than that, they were really easy to peel and they are very sturdy.
