Caring for Your Hydrangea

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove protective packaging and guard petals (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Bridal Shower Flowers

I was very indecisive about where to order my wedding flowers. Do I order from a florist, pay a lot of money for the flowers, and pay someone to arrange them? I had prioritized my budget and flowers were not at the top of it. These flowers were ordered as a "trial run" for my wedding so I could see the quality and the actual color in person before the big day. I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing the flowers turned out. The roses were big and beautiful and stayed beautiful for a week and a half! The carnations were very pretty, as well, however, they were a bit more red than I had hoped. They still turned out nice with the other flowers.

The half of a star that I took off of the review comes from me not being able to get the silver dollar eucalyptus. That was one of the main reasons why I bought this package and I was notified 2 days before my flowers were set to arrive that they were not of good quality and couldn't be shipped. The company was amazing and substituted another type of greenery at no cost to me. They were beautiful too but I had my mind set on eucalyptus and would have loved to been able to get what I had ordered. I understand that it was of no fault of the company and I appreciate that they don't send things that are not of good quality. Overall, the flowers were wonderful!

Simple, Rustic, Beautiful

When Michael and I got engaged, we knew we wanted a wedding that was quintessentially "us." For us, that meant keeping things simple and doing LOTS of little DIY details, including the flowers. Initially, I thought I wanted only greenery - eucalyptus, olive, and rosemary - all of which I planned to trim from our own trees at home. As I started practicing making my bouquet and Michael's boutonniere, however, I decided that I wanted more variety, especially of texture, and my bouquet just didn't look quite right without any flowers whatsoever. That's when I found FiftyFlowers, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I had my flowers and extra greenery delivered directly to our venue, and they bloomed perfectly and at just the right time. My mother-in-law and maid-of-honor helped put everything together, and it turned out to be one of my favorite parts of our weekend, just the three of us laughing and arranging flowers. The FiftyFlowers team was great and made the process super easy. I will definitely be using them for future events and highly recommend them to anyone doing their own flowers!
