Caring for Your Hypericum Berries

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove protective packaging and guard petals (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Happy to Help, and Terrified!

My daughter Tory called several months back, and said "Jo is engaged! ......Oh, by the way, she was hoping you might help with the flowers?!"

What you need to know is Jo, and another friend from high school, the Maid of Honor, are special to me, as they reached out to Tory when we moved her in High School and became great friends to Tory and our family.

Well Jo thought I'd be "good at it." So without asking the size of the wedding party or the location, I said "sure." Then the panic set in big time!! The good news is my niece had a bridal flower business prior to 3 munchkins under the age of 6. Bad news she is 1000 miles away and could not help with the actual flowers. Barbara Leigh recommended FiftyFlowers.com immediately. Commented how awesome your company had been in the past. Based on pictures from Pinterest which Jo liked, and the venue (outdoors and heat) conditions, helped me select the flowers and quantity to use.

The ordering process and follow-up were excellent. Flower preparation suggestions and instructions on your website are very helpful, not to mention books, and You Tube videos....as I mentioned I had a fair amount of anxiety (totally put on upon myself by me).....your communications were great prior to delivery and delivery day! Amazing shipping boxes and preparation. All flowers arrived on time and in great condition. I processed as instructed and placed in large buckets of water.... they held up extremely well in the buckets for the 5 hour car ride. The flowers were assembled in the Hotel lobby the day of the evening wedding....the rest is history.

Everyone LOVED the flowers! My personal favorite was the head piece I made from portion of a wire headband (cut a 4 inch piece out of a full headband and wired the flowers.)

Great experience. Thank you for a great product and service! Barb

DIY Fun with Cabbage Roses

My flowers arrived tightly budded and sleepy, but perked up and looked terrific within 36 hours. I combined them with succulents to make centerpieces, and used other pink and green silks to make the brides' and bridesmaids' bouquets. Everyone agreed that they looked wonderful!

wedding flowers

I was very nervous about ordering flowers for my daughter's wedding online. When I ordered the flowers they called me the next day to let me know that the delivery date I had picked needed to be changed for the flowers to be at their best for the wedding. I received a phone call and an email when the flowers were shipped and an email on the delivery day informing me of the time of delivery down to almost the exact time of they would arrive. I received another phone call the day of delivery from the company making sure we received the flowers and asking if we needed any help with how to take care of the flowers. I could not of asked for better service and the flowers were perfect. I would recommend Fifty Flowers to my friends and family. Thanks for all of the help and the beautiful flowers!
