Caring for Your Flowers

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging and rubber bands on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove any protective packaging, rubber bands, and guard petals, if present (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Tinted Flowers: Tinted roses may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

Appalachian Wedding

I've always wanted the color peach in my wedding, when my now husband proposed in June I know I couldn't wait until the following year for our spring wedding! We decided to get married in the fall and I was incredibly nervous, the uncertainty of the weather in October in East Tennessee was enough to make me want an indoors wedding. However to keep my guests safe we wanted to keep everything as outdoors and as airy as possible. Once all the details were settled I got to work designing and curating all the details for our perfect Appalachian wedding. I am a fashion designer so it was really exciting to use my skills to develop a color pallet and shapes for the florals - plus the added challenge of keeping peach into the fall color scheme! I knew before we were even engaged that I wanted to use FiftyFlowers, I was so excited to see that all of my colors were on the website and fit perfectly in to my vision. I knew I always wanted lots of flowers and I think I accomplished my goal. The support chat was incredibly helpful in making sure I had more than enough florals for all the arrangements! They arrived at my parents house and we got to work unpacking the meticulous boxes! Everything turned out beautifully! I am beyond thrilled that our wedding was so beautiful and that the flowers were such a huge part of that! Our day was dreamy, southern, etherial, and exactly what I wanted.

Wedding was planned 5 Times but the Flowers remain

2020 has been the year of altered plans. We got word that our venue could no longer hold our ceremony due to COVID 2 weeks before our wedding. We promised each other than no matter how the ceremony happened we would still get marries on our planned day. We decided to have a small ceremony in the mountains instead of the ski resort wedding we had planned on. Things clearly had to be scaled down significantly but I decided to let the flowers be the one "big" thing we kept. While the day was very quaint we had the most incredible flowers imaginable. They were a wonderful addition to the snowy scenery that surrounded us. We held our reception at a cabin and these flowers turned a cute cabin into a wonderful atmosphere. While our big day was not the one we planned, it turned out to be better than ever dreamed. Thank you Fifty Flowers for being a constant through all the ups and downs of wedding planning!
