Caring for Your Craspedia Billy Balls

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Tinted Flowers: Tinted flowers may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

  • Because this is a natural product, there is a chance that some of the flower’s original color may still be visible beneath the tint.

These were actually more of a pale, musty yellow than the bright green shown in the photograph on this website, but they were a really fun flower and added an interesting texture to the boutonnieres, bouquets, and centerpieces! (Update: Customer actually received natural yellow, instead of tinted green!)

My Grandmother's dream

This story is very bittersweet to my husband and I, along with out family. Both of my grandmothers were very dear to my husband and I's heart. My paternal grandmother helped me plan our wedding, including colors, flowers, dresses, etc. My maternal grandmother was married in April, along with her mother, grandmother, and my mother. I had to get married in April because I had to keep this tradition going! We never realized it until my husband Aaron and I got engaged and were planning the wedding. It was quite comical, but what a coincidence! My grandmothers' favorite flowers were hydrangeas and roses, which is why I chose the flowers I did. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, along with my family and friends when it came to putting flowers together to look pretty! I was petrified but excited at the same time as we ordered the flowers to be shipped in April.

One month prior to our wedding my paternal grandmother passed, and we were heartbroken (my maternal grandmother passed one month after the wedding). I wore her 25th wedding anniversary jewelry for my wedding day as you can see in a few of the pictures. That day came, and it seemed as if something was missing the entire time, as we were all very close to her. The only thing that kept us laughing and smiling is how on earth we made the flowers look so good! Not a single person involved in arranging the flowers had any experience, and seeing the bouquets, centerpieces and church arrangements blew us all away! I have also never seen my father so concerned over flowers and making sure they were not going to die within 2 days of arrival (I received numerous phone calls and texts from him in regards to the flowers and how they were doing at all hours of the day).

Our wedding day turned out great, and so many guests couldn't get over how great the flowers looked! We kept high fiving each other as we received compliments! As wedding favors, we sent home the flower centerpieces in the square glass vases that I purchased with each table that wanted one. I also had A LOT of baby's breath left over, so I used that and lace ribbon to tie on each church pew. I also had a few hydrangeas and roses left over so I put together a large vase arrangement for the front of the church, behind the pastor. A few days later I took that large arrangement and placed it on my grandmother's grave, as I knew she was there that day, and deserved flowers for being the woman she was.

The flowers were perfect, and lasted so much longer than expected! I received numerous phone calls and texts from guests telling me their flowers were still alive and were still beautiful! It may have been just my luck that we received such beautiful flowers that lived as long as they did....but I think it had something to do with Fifity Flowers and my grandmother in heaven helping as well! I thank you so much for everything! The flowers turned out more than perfect!
