Caring for Your Spider Mums

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • No More Netting - If your flowers come with netting around the blooms, remove these while processing.

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

So beautiful and 10 days later, still going strong!

Im fairly new to floral design and still working on finding good suppliers who don’t charge an arm and a leg for product plus delivery. Thank God for Fifty Flowers! I was able to stay within my budget one of the most beautiful flower I’ve worked with thus far. I’m so glad I picked this particular flower for my event. It was so easy to process, hydrate and design with. The coppery color was absolutely stunning with blue delphinium and burgundy mini carnations. It’s been 10 days since I received the flowers but it’s still going strong in the vase. Would highly recommend!

Those mums look absolutely lovely in your fall-themed décor. They exude a warm and inviting ambiance that perfectly complements the delphinium and burgundy mini carnations. We love how you've incorporated them and it's clear that you have an eye for creating beautiful and festive arrangements!

Thank you so much for choosing us. We're honored to be your go-to source for high-quality flowers!

These added a touch of elegance. The color is like a muted coral or like an antique dusty coral.

Coral Supreme Success!

Mark & I were married on a Saturday and I had planned to do the flowers on the Friday before the wedding, after receiving them on the Thursday before. We ordered the sweetheart jam tart roses, after realizing that coral ranunculus were impossible to find in the spring time for our boutonnieres, and I'm so glad we did! These hearty little roses were so adorable and paired beautifully with the coral peonies we chose. We used them for boutonnieres & corsages, which a friend of mine, Sarah Skrekas made for us! The flowers all arrived in a good state and we immediately went on to process them, get them trimmed and in water. The peonies started opening immediately and were gorgeous, but we notices shortly that because of the warm/hot weather, they were opening at a rate that was too fast for them to last well until Saturday. I put the flowers in the basement in ice, but on the Friday morning, there were only a few left living to work with...you can imagine my stress! I went ahead and made 4 bouquets with the the peonies & with the roses, which I had not initially intended on including in them. However, they looked so very lovely, I'm not sure why that wasn't in my first plan, which also used white hypericum, dusty miller & seeded eucalyptus! I went ahead with my day and was calling around trying to find some more flowers to fill the vases and find a solution. In the mid-morning, I received a call from fifty flowers asking me about how the flower delivery & everything had turned out. I told them that most of the flowers had died in the processing and they said to send a photo along and they would see to it that I received a new batch of peonies the next day, at no charge. You can imagine my relief! The next set of flowers that came were even lovelier than the first and arrived that Saturday morning of the wedding. They bloomed perfectly throughout the whole day (opened very quickly) and still looked amazing the next day at our family brunch! I was so in love with these coral supremes, that I didn't even mind that there had been a mini-tragedy with the first bunch. FiftyFlowers handled the situation very well & made my wedding flower dreams possible, at a cost that I found highly reasonable, for the blooms & quantity that I received!
