Caring for Your Carnations

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove protective packaging and guard petals (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Tinted Flowers: Tinted flowers may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

Disappointed

I ordered these blue and white denim carnations to include one of the wedding colors in the floral arrangement. I ordered for Thursday delivery along with seeded eucalyptus, three different types of roses and carnation sprays. Fed ex delivered all of the flowers on Thursday morning except these denim carnations. I didn't know they weren't there until I processed all the other boxes and got everything trimmed and put into water. I contacted customer service and they let me know they were still coming that day. I was working from home, but the delivery driver didn't honk or come to the door, just reported no one was home and left with the denim carnations. I was notified by customer service of this. Contacted FedEx and they said it would be 24-48 hours to arrange to pick them up. Told them to bring them back Friday morning. It was almost noon when they arrived. When I opened the box, to unpack the flowers, they looked quite sad. 4 of the flower heads fell off. I processed these-cut and put in water with floral food and put them in a cool dark room with the other flowers. Most of these didn't open and the ones that did were mostly white with a tinge of blue. Most of the color was in the water. I was so disappointed because this was the only blue element for the arrangements, not to mention they didn't open to full size. The wedding was a week ago and I realize a large part of the problem was on FedEx. I'm sure they wouldn't have been so stressed ( and neither would I have been) had they been delivered timely and not riding around in a hot vehicle.
That being said, your customer service is top notch with communication. And she tried to be helpful.

Hi Catherine,
Thank you for taking the time to provide your detailed feedback. We sincerely apologize for the issues you faced with the Blue and White Denim Carnations. We understand how important it was to include this blue element in your wedding arrangements, and we truly regret any trouble caused by the delayed delivery and the subsequent condition of the flowers.
We are glad to hear that the rest of your order—Blushing Beauty Poma Rosa Roses, White Mini Carnation Flowers, Floreana White Spray Roses, Eskimo White Rose, and Seeded Eucalyptus Greenery—arrived on time and met your expectations.
Your feedback about the carnations not opening and the color disappointment is invaluable. We are incorporating education on how to force open carnations into our customer resources. This is a simple technique that can ensure more consistent results, and your feedback has helped us develop this for future customers.
Our customer service team prides itself on top-notch communication and support, and we are delighted to hear that this was reflective in your experience. However, we acknowledge that the delay in FedEx's delivery added unnecessary stress to your preparation, and for that, we apologize.
Thank you again for your understanding and for choosing FiftyFlowers. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 1-877-50-ROSES or cservice@fiftyflowers.com.
