Birds of Paradise are the most popular tropical flowers used in floral decorations. Resembling a bird's head, the flower features spiky orange and purplish-blue petals that emerge from the beak-like flower. This tropical flower alone would make a unique table arrangement or can be combined in your bridal bouquet or flower gift arrangement. Our Birds of Paradise are shipped fresh from our South American farms located in the tropical jungles and are of top quality. SHIPPING included in an affordable wholesale flower price.

Symbolism: Birds of Paradise symbolize joy, freedom, and paradise itself. Their striking, sculptural form adds bold color to exotic bouquets, tropical arrangements, and dramatic statement installs.

Additional Information

The hard, beak-like spathe sits perpendicular to the stem and resembles a bird's head. The flower emerges from it, typically with 3 orange and 3 purplish-blue petals.

Birds of Paradise may arrive closed, with no orange petals visible. If blooms stay hidden or petals begin browning, gently use your thumb or tweezers to pull a petal from the spathe to encourage blooming. You can watch a short video tutorial of this process here. For full care instructions, see the Flower Care tab on this page.

Please Note

Your flowers will arrive looking thirsty and sleepy. This is absolutely NORMAL. Please see our Flower Care tab on this page to learn how to properly care for and handle your flowers.

As flowers are a natural product of Mother Nature and monitor resolutions can differ, the exact color tones of this flower may vary to some degree.

Package contents and prices are based on availability and may change due to weather and market conditions. If a substitution is necessary, we take great care to ensure your order closely matches your original flower choice, even if this means substituting flowers of higher value. While we will make every effort to contact you, there may be rare instances where we are unable to reach you in time. In such cases, we may proceed with substitutions to ensure your order ships on schedule, even without prior verbal confirmation.

Caring for Your Birds of Paradise

Birds of Paradise are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. If your flowers appear "sleepy" or "thirsty" after their journey, this is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Tropical Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Use

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack Promptly: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Packaging: Take off any rubber bands or plastic sleeves securing the flower bunches.

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to hydrate properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow tropical flowers to hydrate for a minimum of 4 hours, although 8 hours is ideal.

  • Storage: Keep flowers in a room between 55-65 degrees, away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat.  Do not refrigerate your tropical flowers - cold storage can damage the blooms.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Tropical flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your tropical flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Special Notes for Birds of Paradise

  • Birds of Paradise may arrive with their orange petals still hidden inside the spathe (green head). Soak the flower heads in warm water for 20 minutes to soften the sheath. To assist blooming or replace petals that have browned, gently insert your thumbnail and pull one of the hidden petals outward. Each stem contains multiple blooms that will emerge over time.

  • Birds of Paradise may also appear soft, compressed, or slightly limp due to shipping. This is normal — they will perk up beautifully after proper hydration and misting.

  • These blooms are extremely sensitive to cold. Avoid placing them near vents, open windows, or anywhere below 60°F.

Thanks

Second order with 50 flowers. It was positive and timely and the quality was great! Only feedback - I had not bought birds of paradise before and it would have been good to have a sheet about manual blooming, they arrived tight and I was unsure until I called a florist friend.

Hi Andrea,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and for being a returning customer—we appreciate your support! We're so glad to hear that you were happy with the timely delivery and quality of the Birds of Paradise flowers.
We also truly appreciate your feedback about the blooming process. Birds of Paradise can indeed arrive with their petals tucked away, which can be a bit tricky if you're unfamiliar with manual blooming. To make the process easier, here’s a quick tip: gently use your thumb or tweezers to pull the petals from the spathe if they’re hidden, especially if they show signs of browning. We’ve even created a short video tutorial to help walk you through it, which you can watch on our 'Additional Information' section.
Additionally, we include care instructions on the 'Flower Care' tab of our product page, and we’re actively working on creating more educational resources, including guides and training materials for specialized flower care like this. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve these materials for all of our customers.
If you ever have questions or need assistance, we encourage you to reach out to us within 24 hours of delivery so we can provide any support you need. Thank you again for choosing us, Andrea—we look forward to serving you on your next flower project!
Warm regards,

Beautiful flowers but came closed

Make sure you read the instructions as they came closed and required manipulation to open even after three days. They were beautiful and made a great hit at my moms 50th birthday.
