Caring for Your Spider Mums

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • No More Netting - If your flowers come with netting around the blooms, remove these while processing.

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Pretty Summer Shower

I helped my mother throw a bridal shower for a good family friend this summer in Northeast Ohio. We held the event on the patio at a local restaurant and it ended up being a beautiful sunny afternoon! The group of about 15 min enjoyed a lovely brunch as well as gift opening and great conversation. The decor of the restaurant was rustic with elements that were a bit more modern, so we knew we wanted to add a feminine touch with our flowers. The make it yourself bundle we ordered was a great value and we had fun arranging several tall arrangements as well as small arrangements for the table. The flower is really brought together our color scheme and we received many compliments. Overall it was a great day!

Don't be afraid, you can do it!!

From all the reviews and awards, I knew that FiftyFlowers was a trustworthy company; however, I had no experience with flowers nor did any of my friends! I definitely didn't even know how to cut the stems of a flower! After chatting and many phone calls with costume service and wedding flower planner, Violet, I decided to give it a try. She (Violet) picked the flowers for me and sent me e-mails with directions. Ended up being a lot of fun and the flowers are more resilient than I thought. All I did is change the water once a day and cut the stems in diagonal and they were beautiful on my wedding day. two friends put them together the day before the wedding while we all had a glass of wine, then a guy friend, or should I say "macho" friend cause he is very into guys activities as he is a helicopter pilot for the Coast Guard and never dealt with flowers, but I asked him as a joke if he would do my bouquet, and of course he took it as a challenge and made a beautiful bouquet! So, in conclusion, pick your flowers, watch a couple of 3-4 min youtube videos and have fun! You can totally do it!!
