Eucalyptus Benefits and Uses

Fresh cut eucalyptus has been shown in research, to be a natural decongestant. So when you feel a cold creeping on or the blooming trees are putting pressure on your sinuses, simply bringing a few stems of this healing plant into your home will give your body a fighting edge.

There are a few ways you can creatively achieve this in your own home. Eucalyptus is very aromatic greenery, and one way I like to use it is by giving the ends a snip and putting them in a vase. You can add water to the vase, or let them dry out, to be an everlasting accent piece. They are beauty all their own and look simple and elegant in any vase that you might have at home. Simply rub the leaves between your fingers to release more of the smell if you need it.

Another way you can release the healing aromatic properties of fresh Eucalyptus is to bring it into your shower. Take your bunch of stems and tie them together with twine, wire, or any material you may have in your house that can get wet. Leave a loop of twine with enough length to slip over your shower head and hang there from it. Take showers as normal and enjoy the fresh, invigorating smells. Eucalyptus is a natural remedy for opening up our lungs and breathing in the fresh air.

I think another interesting fact about fresh cut eucalyptus is that it is a natural bug repellant. Those of us living in the warmer parts of the world right now might be seeing the bugs begin to come back to life after the winter months. This is where fresh eucalyptus had an added utility in your home.

One last thing I want to note is that we need to be mindful about where we place the eucalyptus in our homes, as it can be toxic to house pets if ingested. So make sure you place this on a table or shelf that they cannot easily access.

I am reminded of the quote by Robert Tisserand, “Aromatherapy is a caring, hands-on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, to increase energy, to reduce the effects of stress and reduce lost balance to mind, body, and soul.” In the next coming weeks, I will inhale the calming smell of eucalyptus in my own home and remind myself of this, as a mantra. We are all in this together, and from that, we all shall heal.
