Caring for Your Daisies & Poms

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Simple Summer Wedding

We had a smallish wedding (~60 guests) and wanted to keep things inexpensive and DIY. Our colors were dark red, pale pink, and navy blue, so the Burgundy Blush pack was perfect. I have to admit, having flowers delivered in the mail was a little scary and they did look very 'tired' when they arrived. I followed the recommendations and had them delivered 3 days before the wedding, and I trimmed the ends and kept them in water with plant food. By the evening of the first day, they had perked up, and by the morning of my wedding, had really bloomed! I had zero experience with flower-arranging, but the flowers were so big and gorgeous, it made preparing the centerpieces and bouquet really easy. I used one of the carnations and some rose leaves for my husband's boutonniere. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law helped to arrange the centerpieces the morning of the wedding. Even in the small pack there were plenty of flowers for 10 centerpieces and and a special centerpiece for the bride & groom table. I am in the process of drying some of the flowers because I want to preserve some of these gorgeous blooms forever! I got so many compliments on the flowers, and will be recommending FiftyFlowers to all of my friends when they get married.

DIY Ethereal Bouquets

My sister-in-law makes the most beautiful floral arrangements. It's just a hobby for her, but her work is perfection and she happily accepted when I asked her to make the bouquets and boutonnieres for the wedding. I saved a good chunk of money by having her make them, but it was a LOT of work. A few bridesmaids pitched in to help finish wrapping the stems in the hours leading up to the ceremony. We had so much fun with them though and in the end, I had the most beautiful bouquets and I couldn't be happier. Only thing I would have done differently was maybe order less greenery. We had a ton leftover that I ended up pitching. Also, amazing customer service. They called immediately after I ordered to go over everything and then when they were delivered I utilized the Live Chat to ask a last-minute question about storing our greenery and they were very knowledgeable and friendly. I recommend FiftyFlowers to everyone!

Amazing Orchids

I ordered the dyed blue dendrobium orchids from your site and had a local florist arrange them for my wedding. The flowers arrived at the florist the Wednesday before my wedding. I called to confirm delivery with the florist, who then informed me that she did not expect the flowers to survive until my wedding just days away. However, I was pleasantly surprised when, not only did the orchids look absolutely beautiful on my wedding day, but remained stunning weeks after my wedding. Thank you so much for your wonderful flowers!
