Caring for Your Centerpieces

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut centerpiece into the prepared water immediately. If placing more than one centerpiece in a bucket, make sure there is enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut: Give your centerpiece another fresh cut and place it in your prepared container/bucket. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process (see below).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your centerpiece is now ready for you to add additional flowers (if desired).

  • Recut and Maintain: After your centerpiece is complete, make sure to recut the stems before placing in your container and maintain the water level.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

  • Tinted Flowers: If your centerpiece contains tinted flowers, they may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

Amazing!!

The flowers were absolutely gorgeous and so many sweet complements about the flowers. We ordered the large bundle, 10 centerpieces, and a box of greenery. We had PLENTY! We had bud vases on 20 tables so we had to divide the centerpiece arrangements. We had enough for the 20 tables and the main buffet table. The large box made bridal bouquets, five bridesmaids, about 18 boutonnières and corsages. We followed the instructions for putting them directly in water with flower food and we kept them in a dark part of the house where it was cooler and no sun. They were perfect for Saturday! Delivery was great! We got them on the Wednesday before the wedding, the day we ordered them for, and all fell into place. The pictures attached are the flowers a week later and from when we received them. We would definitely use them again!!

Hi Heather!

We're so happy we helped make the wedding even more unforgettable! It's wonderful to hear the large pack was perfect for your arrangements and got you complimented. Using your creativity is a great suggestion! The idea is to make the DIY flower process as fun as can be.

Thank you for sharing your pictures! We love the final look and the pop of color :)

As a trial run, I ordered these flowers for mother's day. I made two large vases for my mom and grandma and they were beautiful! They looked amazing for almost two weeks after I received them. The roses did appear more pink than peach but we were fine with them! I will definitely be using FiftyFlowers for my wedding.
