Caring for Your Mums

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • No More Netting - If your flowers come with netting around the blooms, remove these while processing.

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Tinted Flowers: Tinted flowers may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

  • Because this is a natural product, there is a chance that some of the flower’s original color may still be visible beneath the tint.

Wedding Flowers

Our wedding was simple, and small. Our planning was very minimal, but we had fun with it.

Almost all of our decorations were homemade, and we wanted to do our own flower arrangements. Originally we had picked a box box store to deliver our flowers, but forgot to order them, oops. So a week before the wedding the other store couldn't deliver in time, and thus insued a stressful two hours of calling and freaking out over the prices other florists charged.

Until we landed on fiftyflowers.com. They had the colors, and flowers we needed, and could deliver in the time we needed AND they weren't over priced. So we placed an order and went on with our day. We then received a call from fiftyflowers with one of their reps explaining that they were calling not because there was a problem with the order, but that they were worried that the date we picked for delivery and the even date were so close together the lillies we ordered wouldn't open in time. So they changed our order for us, split up the deliveries to arrive on different days to allow the lillies to open, while still getting the other flowers as fresh and beautiful as they could be. Not only were they proactive in making sure my order was right, my flowers would look good on the day of our wedding, super professional, and they didn't charge extra for anything.

So our last minute panic led us to a gem of a company I would definitely recommend.
