Caring for Daffodils

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 2 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available. Shallow water will help avoid stem deterioriation.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate. Daffodils may take up to 12 hours to fully hydrate and will begin to open after being placed in water.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark area away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. If storing several days in advance, dry store in refrigeration and hydrate 2 days before use.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: Recut stems during arranging and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24–48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Special Notes for Daffodils

  • After cutting, condition Daffodils separately in water for several hours to allow sap to drain before combining with other flowers.

  • Once conditioned, do not recut stems when arranging in mixed bouquets, as sap may re-release and harm other blooms.

  • Once blooms open, a brown paper-like sheath may appear. This is natural and should be gently removed.

  • Expert Tip: Insert a chenille stem up the hollow stem for support when arranging in floral foam.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Keep flower stems submerged while allowing blooms to rest above the vase rim to prevent damage.

  • Warmer environments will accelerate blooming, while cooler storage will prolong vase life.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging to help extend freshness.

Wedding Beauty

We ordered these flowers for our wedding. Being on a tight budget and doing a DIY wedding, we can't say how easy this process (ordering, delivery, arranging) was! We had a slight mishap on the delivery day and had to chase down the FedEx truck. Even after spending a few hours in the hot truck, we easily got the flowers unpacked and into water. To say that these flowers were RESILIENT is an understatement!!!! As with any DIY wedding there are always a few hurdles....but the flowers were not one of them! We had many compliments about the flowers and couldn't have been happier with the whole process from the amazing selection available to customer service, floral design assistance, ordering, delivery, and the truly resilient flowers that we received. The total cost was a little more than we budgeted for, but the little bit extra we paid was well worth it!! #TWOHAPPYBRIDES!
