Caring for Your Flower Bouquets

Our arrangements are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Bouquet Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut bouquet into the prepared water immediately. If placing more than one bouquet in a bucket, make sure there is enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut: Give your bouquet another fresh cut and place it in your prepared vase/bucket. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process (see below).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your bouquet is now ready for you to add additional flowers and/or ribbon treatment if desired.

  • Recut and Maintain: After your bouquet is complete, make sure to recut the stems and maintain the water level in your vase ensuring it stays below ribbon (if applicable).

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

  • Tinted Flowers: If your bouquet contains tinted flowers, they may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

Disappointed

These were ordered to use for my daughter’s wedding bouquet on October 13th. I ordered for Saturday delivery to be as close to the 2 day suggested arrival. I was contacted by someone from Fiftyiwers who indicated delivery Friday before would be best and they changed to that and refunded the extra $25 Saturday delivery fee. The flowers arrived beautifully Friday and I followed the care instructions exactly - cutting stems and feeding in fresh water - about 2 inches - leaving the wrap on for the first 4 hours as directed. Evidently one or more stems must have been diseased on arrival because each day leading up to the event there were a few stems that were soggy and mushy and smelled bad and had to be cut back quite a bit. Each day was the same experience- water was changed daily, stems cut at an angle, fed with plant food, and kept out of the refrigerator snd in a non drafty room out of direct sunlight and still a few more stems were soft and mushy and had to be cut much shorter and some of the calla blooms began to brown around the edges. By the day of the event we were only able to salvage about 7 stems to use in the bouquet and had to fill in with other flowers. The flowers were beautiful on arrival but definitely didn’t hold up for the event as intended and hoped for.

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing these details about the calla lilies you ordered for your daughter’s wedding on October 13th. We appreciate you noting that the flowers arrived beautiful on Friday, and we’re also glad our team was able to adjust the delivery date and refund the $25 Saturday delivery fee.

We completely understand how incredibly disappointing this experience was, especially after you followed all the care instructions so carefully. Having to scramble right before such an important event and only being able to save a handful of stems is absolutely not the experience you planned for or deserved on your special day.

Your experience is important to us, and we would like the opportunity to review what happened. If you haven’t already, please reach out to our team with any photos you may have from the days the issues appeared, along with your order number, so we can look into a resolution. For future reference, please don’t hesitate to contact us within 24 hours of delivery if anything seems off, as that timing allows us to help right away.
