Caring for Your Alstroemeria

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Everyone LOVED my Billy Balls!

Calling 4 days (3 business days, really) before my private wedding/elopement, I should have gotten laughed off the phone. I probably should have gotten someone who wasn't located in this country or at the very least, gotten my order messed up. But instead, I got a dream. A *real* dream come true! I had wanted Billy Balls as my wedding flowers from the moment I got engaged (maybe before, actually). Traveling from Baltimore to New Orleans for my wedding meant I would do a fake bouquet. I thought it would be just fine if my photographer used a nice soft filter and no one would ever notice. When I told this to my mom, step-mom, and girlfriends it was met with quite a bit of opposition. They told me that I can't be a gardener who grows roses, dahlias, and peonies, and then go to a craft store to buy flowers?!?!? It just wouldn't be me! After rummaging through the wedding industrial complex and all of the other offerings that the internet provided, I found myself here. Once here, I called. Once I called, I spoke to the most amazing real life recent bride herself who was every bit as understanding of a last minute bride (she too, had eloped) without one ounce of told-ya-so or judgment. She had taste and style and shared it selflessly, but all while appreciating my frugality. She absolutely made my dreams come true. My order was one hundred percent perfect. My flowers actually arrived to the hotel a DAY ahead of me. The hotel was incredibly accommodating, bordering on excited, to have such an amazing and large quantity of beautiful flowers to view for a day prior to my arrival. When I posted the wedding pictures to my account on a social networking website, the flowers got as many compliments as I did! I was so pleased to see that others enjoyed them as much as me. And to know that *I* arranged them and styled them in a manner best suited to my desires, and my husband's taste, was a way that I could add a personal touch to nature's beauty on our day.
