Caring for Your Ferns

Greenery is shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your greens might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Greenery Care Steps – From Arrival to Use

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack Promptly: Cut any straps to remove greenery from the box. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Packaging: Take off any rubber bands or plastic sleeves protecting the greens.

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Trim the Stems: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place Immediately: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the greenery to hydrate properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow your greenery to hydrate for a minimum of 4 hours, although 8 hours is ideal.

  • Storage: Store your hydrated greenery in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing in a refrigerator.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Greenery drinks heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your greenery is ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep greenery fresh.

Our Bohemian Barn Wedding

We wanted our celebration to be laid back, joyful, and to just feel like us. I'm a bit of a tree-hugging flower child, and our venue was a beautiful rustic barn on a lake with huge oak trees, so my vision for our flowers was something both whimsical and classic. I had the hardest time finding a florist in our budget who could provide what I was dreaming of. I was nervous about buying flowers online, but they turned out absolutely beautiful! We had enough flowers for 17 centerpieces, my bridal bouquet, six bridesmaids bouquets, my flower crown, two corsages for the mothers, and a few other arrangements scattered around the venue. The flowers arrived right on time a few days before the wedding, looking exactly as promised- lovely, but thirsty. We followed the instructions provided by Fifty Flowers, and had no issues. The day before the wedding, we had about 15 generous friends and family members who came and helped us arrange all the flowers. With all the help, we were done within a few hours well before the rehearsal.
The day of our wedding was absolutely perfect. Everything turned out so beautifully! We had flowers everywhere, and had so many complements on our centerpieces. It was absolutely amazing to have so many people we love in one place to celebrate such a momentous and joyful moment in our lives.
