Caring for Your Hypericum Berries

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

First Time Wedding Flowers for the Floyd Wedding

On September 3, 2016, I married my best friend. We met one night in college while each playing "wingman" for our friends who were interested in each other. It was over from there!

Flowers have always played a large role in our relationship. My husband has a green thumb and loves horticulture. While most guys were buying their girlfriends pre-cut bouquets, my guy was buying me actual plants and teaching me how to care for them. He proposed to me at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. We both knew that flowers and plants would play a large part in our wedding and the natural greenery of our venue was one of our biggest determining factors when deciding on the Inn at Oak Lawn Farms.

Unfortunately, we had a fairly tight budget for our wedding. Where most people spend upwards of $20K on their weddings, we had a budget of $12K. We knew with that budget we would not be able to afford a florist and so began my search for wholesale flowers. In my search, I came across FiftyFlowers and spent many hours and weeks researching and calculating and practicing to see what I could do on my own and how many of each flower I would need to purchase. I ended up purchasing ivory Hydrangeas, white Ranunculus, white Carnations, purple mini Carnations, Silver Dollar Eucalyptus, and Seeded Eucalyptus for all of my wedding flowers and ended up keeping the cost under $1,000! I practiced before the wedding and figured out exactly what I wanted for each bouquet, boutonniere, centerpiece, and additional decorations around the venue. I was so proud of myself for being able to put all of this together and have it all turn out so incredibly beautiful with no previous floral experience. My wedding flowers were exactly what I had pictured and for a fraction of the cost!

I was so lucky to have come across FiftyFlowers and the customer service team was such a huge help! I still have my bridal bouquet in a vase on display and every time I look at it, my heart is warmed remembering this most perfect day!
