Caring for Your Flower Bouquets

Our arrangements are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Bouquet Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut bouquet into the prepared water immediately. If placing more than one bouquet in a bucket, make sure there is enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut: Give your bouquet another fresh cut and place it in your prepared vase/bucket. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process (see below).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your bouquet is now ready for you to add additional flowers and/or ribbon treatment if desired.

  • Recut and Maintain: After your bouquet is complete, make sure to recut the stems and maintain the water level in your vase ensuring it stays below ribbon (if applicable).

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

  • Tinted Flowers: If your bouquet contains tinted flowers, they may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

Pretty but arrived a day later than planned and didn’t last long.

Our representatives we dealt with were very nice! We ordered flowers, center pieces and my bridal bouquet from FiftyFlower. Shipping was a day late and didn’t require a signature as told they would. The flowers were very pretty but didn’t last long.

Hi Marla,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We’re happy to hear our representatives were very nice and that you found the flowers, centerpieces, and bridal bouquet pretty.

However, we understand how disappointing this must have been to have your bridal bouquet arrive a day later than planned and to feel like the blooms didn’t last as long as you expected. Our notes show the kits and centerpieces arrived on time, and while the bouquet did arrive a day late, it was still delivered ahead of your event. We also appreciate you mentioning the signature requirement. Signature required is standard for most boxes, but at times a carrier may still deliver without obtaining one.

Your experience is important to us, and your feedback helps us continue improving our delivery communication and expectations around carrier handling. For any future order concerns, please reach out within 24 hours of delivery so we can review the details with you right away.
