Caring for Calla Lilies

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate. Calla Lilies may take up to 12 hours to fully hydrate.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark area away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival. Refill as needed and ensure stems stay submerged.

  • Change Water Daily: Calla Lilies retain plenty of water in their stems but are sensitive to bacteria. To prevent the stems from curling upward, change the water daily and maintain a water level of at least 2 inches.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: Recut stems during arranging and monitor water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24–48 hours.

  • Change Water Daily: Calla Lilies retain plenty of water in their stems but are sensitive to bacteria. To prevent the stems from curling upward, change the water daily and maintain a water level of at least 2 inches.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Keep the lower stem portions submerged while allowing the blooms to stay above the container rim to avoid bruising.

  • Warmer environments may accelerate bloom curling or opening slightly; cooler conditions will help maintain structure.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging to help extend vase life.

Planning My Own Flowers

Everyone was either worried or laughing at me when I told them that I wanted to put together my own bouquet and then do the rest of the flowers, instead of hiring a florist. But I was determined to save some money and create a look that was all my own doing. As soon as the flowers came in I was blown away by the quality of the flowers. So processing and putting the bouquets together was absolutely amazing. I was easily able to store the flowers in big buckets while we waited for the flowers to open up. I would definitely tell people that putting together your own bounquets and centerpieces is something that is totally possible and kinda fun!

Great!

I ordered the 18 bunches of the White Combo Pack and was very happy with it! I had them delivered on Wednesday. They arrived all in 1 box, which I was surprised about! My only complaint was that flower food was not included, I had to scramble to find some - luckily a local florist gave me some. We took them all out, cut the stems, and put them in water in our basement. (We did have s small issue with the Limonium being stinky, but a capful of bleach did the trick!) Only 1 gerber arrived damaged, but we had plenty of flowers - it was missing it's tube. My mom cut the stems again on Thursday and gave them fresh water. On Friday we took them to the venue and arranged them. I had enough to fill about 30 bottles - on 15 guest tables and more to decorate around the venue. I did add some purple chive flowers to them that my parents had in their garden and it really made a big difference - so I'd suggest adding a little pop of color if you can. They looked gorgeous! The limonium and daisies actually still look good 19 days later!!! The alstroemeria lasted about 2 weeks and the gerberas and snapdragons a little over a week.

Overachieving Orchids !!

I ordered orchids through FiftyFlowers.com for arrival on Wednesday, May 6 before my Saturday, May 9th wedding. The orchids arrived in beautiful condition. We used them to decorate our reception hall, cake and for all of the bouquets and boutonnieres. We had dozens left after the ceremony and brought them home to enjoy. I finally threw away the last of my orchids on Monday, July 7th- OVER EIGHT WEEKS AFTER DELIVERY!!! I had no idea I'd enjoy them that long. All I did was clip the dead/spent blooms and periodically recut the stims and changed the water. I will not hesitate to use FiftyFlowers any time I need fresh flowers for whatever occassion!
