Caring for Calla Lilies
Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.
Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement
Step 1: Unpack and Inspect
Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.
Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.
Step 2: Prepare the Containers
Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt.
Fill Containers: Add at least 2 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available. Shallow water will minimize curling of the stem ends.
Step 3: Trim and Place in Water
Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.
Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom.
Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.
Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain
Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate. Calla Lilies may take up to 12 hours to fully hydrate.
Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool (but not too cool - Callas prefer temperatures above 45 degrees), dark area away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat.
Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival. Refill as needed and ensure stems stay submerged.
Change Water Daily: Calla Lilies retain plenty of water in their stems but are sensitive to bacteria. To prevent the stems from curling upward, change the water daily and maintain a water level of at least 2 inches.
Step 5: Time to Design
Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.
Recut and Maintain: Recut stems during arranging and monitor water levels.
Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24–48 hours.
Change Water Daily: Calla Lilies retain plenty of water in their stems but are sensitive to bacteria. To prevent the stems from curling upward, change the water daily and maintain a water level of at least 2 inches.

After looking into the cost of a florist for my desired bouquets, I immediately began researching DIY bouquets for the wedding. I knew we could make something beautiful, it would just take a little work and convincing of my mother! After reading several blogs and reviews on various sites, I decided to go with FiftyFlowers. They seemed to have the best bang for the buck: their reviews were great, and the blogs are helpful. This was the BEST decision I could have made. I had a free consultation with Violet. She is fabulous to work with. She looked at my pinterest boards to get a feel for the bouquets and styles that I liked, and she worked with our budget. After pondering over our choices for a few days, we decided to go with the 200 Roses & 300 Carnations Wedding Combo Pack. This option was great because we could choose several colors and a variety of flowers. We selected lavender roses, cream carnations, pink hot stock, seeded eucalyptus, and tree fern from the pack. We also added Yves Piaget, Gerrondo Daisies, and Purpleberry Dahlia Cushion Flowers. Ordering the flowers was so easy, and they assured me if there was anything wrong with our order they would call. One week before the wedding, FiftyFlowers called me: my plum gerrondo daisies were not going to make it. The farm had some difficulties with the crops, but FiftyFlowers assured me that I could get another color: the dark cherry. I agreed. The flowers arrived as scheduled. with some arriving Wednesday and others on Thursday. I panicked a little with the Wednesday roses because they were opening rapidly. But I just kept the water very cold to slow them down, and that seemed to help. Come Friday, the flowers looked gorgeous and were ready to arrange! My mom, mother-in-law, sister, and sister-in-law all helped! We started off slow, but once we knew how we wanted them to look the process sped up. Advice: Don't make the bouquets too tight! My bouquet ended up looking like a cone 2 hours before the rehearsal dinner. Thankfully my sister & sister-in-law rearranged it that night. I could not have been happier! The flowers were gorgeous! Our day was perfect and more beautiful than I could ever have imagined. The flowers truly made our garden wedding a dream come true!
