Dahlias are extremely delicate and require refrigeration. FiftyFlowers recommends Dahlias to customers with extensive flower knowledge. Please see the Flower Care tab for detailed instructions on how to properly care for Dahlias.

Watch how dahlias bloom over time in these videos: after 2 days and after 3 days.

Dahlias require delicate care. For a similar look with easier maintenance, consider our collection of Daisies and Poms or Mums and Spider Mums!

Please Note

Your flowers will arrive looking thirsty and sleepy. This is completely NORMAL. Please see our Flower Care tab on this page to learn how to properly care for and handle your flowers.

As flowers are a natural product of Mother Nature and monitor resolutions can differ, the exact color tones of this flower may vary to some degree.

Package contents and prices are based on availability and may change due to weather and market conditions. If a substitution is necessary, we take great care to ensure your order closely matches your original flower choice, even if this means substituting flowers of higher value. While we will make every effort to contact you, there may be rare instances where we are unable to reach you in time. In such cases, we may proceed with substitutions to ensure your order ships on schedule, even without prior verbal confirmation.

Caring for Your Dahlias

Our flowers are shipped directly from our farms to your doorstep. Before shipping, we prepare them for their journey with proper hydration methods. If your flowers appear "sleepy" or "thirsty" after their journey, this is completely normal. Follow the steps below to ensure your dahlias receive the proper care.

Please note: Dahlias are extremely delicate and require refrigeration.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Process Immediately: Get your flowers in water as quickly as possible after arrival.

  • Remove Packaging: Open boxes and remove any protective materials, such as foam or paper.

  • Inspect Your Flowers: Examine all stems and blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Unpack Safely: Cut any straps and remove rubber bands or plastic sleeves holding the bunches together.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Containers: Use sanitized buckets or vases. We recommend rinsing them with warm water to remove bacteria or residue.

  • Fill with Water: Add at least 4 inches of cold, fresh water. If floral food is available, mix it according to package instructions.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below Waterline: Strip off any leaves that would fall below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use sharp floral shears or scissors to cut about 1 inch off each stem diagonally under cool, running water.

  • Place Immediately: Place the freshly cut stems into your prepared container of water right away.

  • Do Not Overcrowd: Give stems space to breathe. Overcrowding can damage the blooms and interfere with hydration.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow at least 4 hours for flowers to hydrate — dahlias may take up to 12 hours to fully perk up.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Dahlias drink heavily upon arrival. Refill water frequently to ensure all stems stay submerged.

  • Change Water Daily: Refresh water every 24 hours to prevent bacteria and keep flowers looking fresh.

Step 5: Storage Conditions

  • Refrigeration Recommended: Dahlias are best stored in a floral cooler or refrigerator set to a minimum of 34°F — but never freezing.

  • Avoid Ethylene Exposure: Remove all fruits and vegetables from your refrigerator before placing dahlias inside, as ethylene gas can severely damage the blooms.

  • Environment: Keep flowers away from sunlight, drafts, and extreme temperatures at all times.

The Dahlias had a rough year due to the drought in CA so I don't want to be hard on them. I will just say the color of this flower was not creamy white. It was actually more of a pink-fuchsia color. Thankfully I loved the color and they actually really gave the bouquets dimension and pizzazz. So thank you mother nature for creating what I didn't know I wanted.

Our Son's Wedding

When my son told me the colors for his wedding I searched for the perfect flower to use. The tie dye dendrobium orchids were perfect. I was extremely nervous about ordering flowers online and then having them shipped to our hotel as the wedding was in Pontiac Michigan. But after reading the reviews online I decided to have a little faith. The hotel was wonderful about letting us ship them there and Fifty Flowers was wonderful about calling with instructions and verifying the flowers arrived fine. The reception was beautiful with lots of compliments on the flowers.

Unfortunately could not use the majority of these because they were damaged and dried out when they arrived and could not be revived. Too delicate.

50% FiftyFlowers, 50% Insanely Talented MOH

I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted our wedding flowers to look like, and a pretty good idea that it wasn't in our budget if we didn't DIY. My MOH bought her flowers from FiftyFlowers, and they were amazing, so I never really looked anywhere else. I ended up way over-ordering, but I'd rather have extra than not enough. Everything about the process was great - the website, ordering*, customer service, delivery, and the actual flowers. I couldn't have been happier with the quality. FiftyFlowers makes GETTING your flowers easy, but real talk: DOING your own flowers takes some work. It took my husband and I an hour or so to unpack them the day they were delivered. I spent a few hours centerpieces the night before the rehearsal. The day of the rehearsal dinner, I was standing in a sea of flowers, trying to wrangle them into centerpieces and bouquets and getting ready to cry because I realized I should have started much much much earlier. My MOH and her husband came over and saved the day - she made our amazing bouquets that I still can't believe were real, and he was my grandma's personal assistant on centerpiece duty. If I didn't have my personal fairy flower godmother, this would be a totally different story. Watch some YouTube videos and practice a few times before your wedding! Make sure you have lots of extra hands to help you, and however long you think it'll take, double that. I'm so happy with how they turned out and I'd order from FiftyFlowers a million times over! *We ended up with half orange and white lilies vs. all dark pink, which initially made me panic, but we made it work. Also, the tulips were pink vs. white. Everything turned out fine, and they were beautiful, it just wasn't exactly what we ordered.
