Caring for Your Flower Bouquets

Our arrangements are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Bouquet Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut bouquet into the prepared water immediately. If placing more than one bouquet in a bucket, make sure there is enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut: Give your bouquet another fresh cut and place it in your prepared vase/bucket. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process (see below).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your bouquet is now ready for you to add additional flowers and/or ribbon treatment if desired.

  • Recut and Maintain: After your bouquet is complete, make sure to recut the stems and maintain the water level in your vase ensuring it stays below ribbon (if applicable).

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

  • Tinted Flowers: If your bouquet contains tinted flowers, they may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

Simple and elegant. We used these by themselves for a bridal bouquet and added some burlap and lace to the outside. We got so many comments about our flowers and couldn't be happier!

Daffodil Dazzler

I wanted some spring flowers for a employee dinner we had for our staff. I had heard of 50 flowers and thought I would give them a try. I wanted beautiful yellow daffodils and that is exactly what I got. They were perfect. I figured they would arrive closed and was a little worried that they would take more than 2 days to open. The staff at 50 flowers assured me that they would open up if I put in a sunny warm spot and they did. They looked and smelled beautiful. They were exactly what I needed to brighten up the room. I wish I would have taken some pictures. I saved the leaves, trimmed and put in water. Then once the daffodils opened, I set a few in the vase with the leaves and it looked like a little daffodil garden. I also just put a few in bud vases around the room. Simple and elegant. I love doing centerpieces and having beautiful flowers to do them will makes it that much better!
