January's Zodiac & Bloom: Exploring Capricorn, Aquarius, and the Carnation
The idea of a birth flower began in ancient Rome, where people gave flowers as a gift on birthdays and for special events. This tradition evolved into a certain flower assigned to each month, a bit of a "flower of the month" club, if you will.
Each zodiac sign also has a certain flower associated with it. This flower expresses details about a person in a way that a multiple-question personality quiz cannot.
Each month, we'll cover the birth flower and zodiac flower, detailing its history and meanings. This is meant to be a fun and entertaining way to learn more about yourself and the people closest to you. Are you ready? Let's explore!
January's Birth Month Flower: Carnation
The carnation is described by the Farmer's Almanac as: Spicy fragrance, fridged petal flower that is widely cultivated. It became a fast sensation in the mid-1800's when it was first brought to the US with over 50 varieties available within 10 years. It's popularity grew and the carnation became known as the "IT" flower for Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and even the State of Ohio (can I get a "Go Buckeyes?!").
The word, "carnation" translates to "Flower of the Gods" in Greek, and resides on the hillsides in Greece. Carnations have been included in European artwork, folklore, medicine, perfumes and revolutions, as well as a sign of remembrance of WWII in the Netherlands.
The carnation symbolizes love and respect, and each color has a different meaning.
Capricorn Zodiac Flower: Pansy
If you were born between December 22nd and January 20th, you are a Capricorn! Capricorns tend to be loyal, ambitious and have a strong sense of responsibility. It's no wonder their zodiac flower is the pansy! The pansy is a flower that can tolerate the cold weather, thriving through the winter, as does the tenacious Capricorn.
Aquarius Zodiac Flower: Orchid
If you were born between January 21st and February 18th, not only does your sign cover the most floral holiday of them all, Valentine's Day, but you are an Aquarius! Full of energy and character, Aquarius are somewhat shy, great humanitarians and are quite original which makes the orchid a perfect pairing. The orchid is a unique flower, delicate yet strong and well-loved.
