Our flowers are shipped directly from our farms to your doorstep. Before shipping your flowers, we prepare them for their journey with proper hydration methods. If your flowers appear sleepy and thirsty after their journey it is absolutely NORMAL. Follow these simple steps to ensure your flowers have the proper care.

*Calla Lilies retain plenty water in their stems for long amounts of time. However, if they are left in bacteria contaminated water, starting from the bottom of the stem, the flower stem will begin to curl upwards. To prevent this, please ensure that you change the water daily, maintaining a water level between 2 inches deep.*

  1. When your boxes arrive, it is important that you get your flowers in water as quickly as possible. Open your boxes and remove any protective packaging, such as foam or paper.
  2. Inspect your flowers.*
  3. Gather buckets or containers to hold the flowers. Ensure your buckets or containers are very clean. We recommend rinsing them with warm water.
  4. Fill the containers with at least 4 inches of fresh, cold water. If flower food is available, follow the package directions for adding it to the water.
  5. Cut any straps and remove flowers from the box. Remove any rubber bands or plastic sleeves securing flower bunches together.
  6. Remove any foliage that would fall below the waterline. Leaves below the waterline may cause bacteria to form, shortening the life of your flowers.
  7. Using sharp flower shears or scissors, cut stems diagonally under cool, running water. Cut about an inch off of each stem.
  8. Immediately after cutting the stem, place the flower in the prepared water.
  9. Ensure that you have sufficient room in each bucket for the amount of stems you will be storing. Do not overcrowd your containers. Overcrowding may damage stems and blooms and effect the blooming process.
  10. Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, flowers may take up to 12 hours to properly hydrate. Periodically check the water levels, flowers drink a lot of water when they first arrive and the water may need to be refilled.
  11. Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, drafts or extreme temperatures. Flowers should be stored in a cool, dry area until ready to use.
  12. Change water every 24 hours to keep flowers fresh.

*If upon first inspection, you foresee a problem with your flowers, do not proceed processing your order. Leave the flowers intact in the box and call us immediately at 1-877-50 ROSES (507-6737)

A FiftyFlowers Fall Wedding

Full disclosure, I work at FiftyFlowers, and have for over 6 years, so DIYing my flowers was definitely something I had planned on doing for a while, especially since I wanted a lot of flowers! Keep in mind, I wouldn't recommend this amount of flowers for most DIY Brides, but since I knew what I was getting myself into and had lots of help I knew we could pull it off. My flowers were delivered 3 days before my wedding, the same day we were getting into town, but thankfully I had the best MOH, who received and started processing all 15 or so boxes. It took a lot of buckets for all these flowers, I honestly couldn't even tell you how many because we ran out and then had to use trash cans, coolers, whatever we could find that would hold water and flowers. Haha. We let the flowers hydrate overnight and then the next evening we had a lil flower arranging party to make all the centerpieces. I had help from my bridesmaids, my mom, mother-in-law and some of my new sisters-in-law and it was so much fun just getting to play with flowers. We set aside some flowers for the bouquets and bouts, since we were going to wait to make those the day before, but then I let them do whatever they wanted since we were having long feasting tables (made by my husband) and I wanted non-matching arrangements placed down the centers of the tables. The centerpieces all went in perfectly rustic birch bark wrapped cans made by one of our amazing customers, Lori Dyer, Lori, I can't thank you enough! (Search her name in our flower stories to see the amazing weddings she's done with our flowers!) Violet, our resident wedding flower planner, and a friend I am glad to have, created all our bouquets and boutonnieres the day before the wedding. This gave me some time to relax and go to our rehearsal dinner. You don't have to do it all when you DIY, just do what you feel comfortable with! All the leftover flowers went to the Bouquet Bar. I have never liked the tradition of the bouquet and garter toss, so the bouquet bar was my way of sharing my job and what I love with our guests. It was a huge hit, especially with the kids, but anyone who wanted could create a lil bouquet to keep or give to someone special. We had a Whisky Bar for my husband. That was a huge hit with the adults. Haha. Our wedding day was truly one of the best days of my life, being surrounded with all our friends and family and all the flowers I could have ever imagined!

Wedding in Maui

I always knew I would someday arrange my daughter's wedding flowers. I had long retired from my wedding flower business but wanted to do this for her. I spent the entire day before designing her centerpieces and bouquets at the kitchen table in the Maui condo. The condo smelled amazing and was jam packed with flowers in buckets and centerpieces scattered about. The bride Tiana went to college and spent many years in New Orleans so there were many touches of New Orleans in the wedding. Including the Jazz Band that played for her Second Line, a fleur de lis cake topper, Mardi Gras masks, table cards, etc. Tiana moved to New Zealand three years ago where she met her amazing and handsome groom Ryan. They picked Maui as a "meeting in the middle" location between her friends and family in the US and her new friends and family in New Zealand. So many of the 45 guests came from New Zealand and London, and many from the Midwest and New Orleans. The wedding day at Olowalu Plantation in Maui was amazing. The grounds are so beautiful and the beach view is stunning. The plantation house is equally beautiful. The ceremony went off without a hitch! The food from Food for the Soul was perfect. The red velvet cake "to die for." Tina from the catering company was also the wedding coordinator - so well organized if there were any problems you could not tell. Her staff was excellent. The day went by all too fast and it was a magical day and experience none of us will ever forget. The flowers were a hit with bridal party and her guests and the bride was happy. She was the one I needed to please! I would like to thank her amazing photographer who provided all the lovely images.
